The US Supreme Court on Monday has ruled to lift limits on sports betting. Thanks to this decision sports betting would become legal in the territory of all the states of the country.

The Supreme Court has approved a 2014 state ruling in New Jersey which allows sports betting in casinos and at horse racing tracks.

The court also declared invalid a 1992 federal law banning sports gambling.

The news pushed the shares of gambling companies in the US and UK leaping, including Britain’s giants William Hill and Paddy Power.

The National Basketball Association and other major US sports bodies had opposed the court’s decision, while the National Collegiate Athletic Association named it a threat to the “integrity of athletic competition”.

However, Justice Samuel Alito stressed that each US state is free to act on sports gambling if Congress does not regulate it directly.
