Online football bets: types, features, and where to bet

Posted by

Football is the world’s most popular sport. Millions of football fans follow the biggest championships, such as FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship and Champions League, and many more. Football clubs have hundreds of thousands of followers on social media, and multimillion transfers of the world’s best football players never escape the attention of fans, who believe that their favorite teams will surely start a winning streak with the help of new players.

Two of the most distinctive characteristics of football are that it’s incredibly spectacular and unpredictable. It’s not at all unusual for frontrunners to be outplayed by seeming outsiders, and for underdogs, whom no one takes seriously, suddenly come out on top. Remember Euro 2014, or Euro 2016, where the winners were Greece and Portugal – even though the two were hardly considered favorites at the start of the respective championships.

So, to predict an outcome of a football match is not as easy as it seems. Nevertheless, football bets are one of the main areas of interest for professional bettors and a favored topic for friendly wagers.

And considering that the Internet is now an integral part of our everyday lives, the very activities of bookmakers, as well as football bets themselves, have moved online. Now bettors have a huge variety of dealers to choose from, but also a difficult question arises: which bookmaker offers the best service and the best odds for a particular football match? The answer is simple: BetFair. Here, both bettors and casual fans willing to make a bet on a match get access to all kinds of popular football bets.

Types of online football bets

  1. Full time result, or 1X2 (win for either of the teams, or a draw)

The simplest and most common way to make a bet, the most appropriate choice for those not particularly experienced in betting.

1 — first team wins;

X — draw;

2 — second team wins.

  1. Total goals (for the whole the match)

The idea here is to base your bet on your predicted total being more or less. The bookmaker sets a particular total, and bettors need to guess whether both teams will score more or less goals in total. For example, if there is a bet for “Over 2.5”, then the bet will win if 3 or more goals are scored during the match (meaning, the game outcome is 2-1, 1-2, 2-2 etc.). Conversely, the bet for “Under 2.5” will win in any outcome with less than 3 goals (0-0, 0-1, 2-0 etc.).

Total goals bets are accepted for first and second halves, or for particular game periods, e.g. from 30 to 45 minutes.

  1. Individual totals — a total for any of the teams, or for a particular player (meaning you can bet on players to score goals).

  2. Double chance — in this case, you bet on one of the two possible results taking place.

– first team wins or it’s a draw

12 – either team wins (no draw)

– second team wins or it’s a draw

  1. Handicap (Asian handicap)

These are bets on the winner which take the handicap into account. The handicap can be positive or negative for either of the teams. For example, a bet for -1.5 handicap for the home team in a MU—Arsenal match, will win if the home team wins by two goals or more.

  1. Correct score

A bet on a full time score, i.e. the exact outcome of the match. One of the most difficult bets to make in a bookmaker’s, which is justified only if the score’s odds are really high.

  1. “Express” bets

Express bets are traditionally one of the most popular ones among the bookmakers’ clients. An express is a combined bet on two or more matches, in which a failed prediction of any of the outcomes by the bettor means the loss of the whole bet.

Intricacies and pitfalls of online betting

Let us note right away that all the bettors can be divided into two categories: sports and gambling fans and professional bettors. The latter are equipped with analytical thinking, are cool-headed and don’t let emotions get the better of them. It’s this category of players that can make online betting a source of a stable income.

To start making money with online football bets, we recommend you to pay attention to the following factors:

  • The chosen team’s latest results which allow you to track if the team is facing a downtrend or an uptrend. Keep in mind that the stats of the two teams’ head-to-head meetings is not that important.
  • Homefield factor. Teams usually play better at home and with significant number of their fans being present.
  • Impartiality. You shouldn’t bet on a team you are a fan of, because there is a risk of letting the emotions have the upper hand.
  • Sticking with the chosen strategy.
  • When making bets, you need to do so using a specifically allocated budget (don’t risk all your savings and don’t bet other people’s money).

Given a calculated and level-headed approach, online bets can provide a stable profit. However, there is already a new service which increases your chances of winning to the maximum.
