2018 World Cup, Last 16. Review

Following the results of eight matches in last 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia let’s see the best moments of these clashes and sides, who are in the quarter-finals of a World Cup finals.

France – Argentina – 4-3

Uruguay – Portugal – 2-1

It seems to be fate that the two geniuses of modern football – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo – had been knocked out of the World Cup in one day. Messi and his Argentine teammates team were surpassed on all counts by a French national team full of abilities, speed, and youth. Kylian Mbappe had become the first player under 20, who scored twice in a World Cup game after since legendary Pele in 1958.

Uruguay beat Portugal, 2-1 thanks to Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani who scored two brilliant goals.

Spain – Russia – 1-1 (3-4 pen.)

Croatia – Denmark – 1-1 (3-2 pen.)

Russia eliminated Spain on penalty kicks, 4-3, after a 1-1 tie, and advanced to World Cup quarterfinals for the first time ever. It was captain and goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, who saved two of Spain’s five penalties.

Croatia beat Denmark on penalties after controversial 1-1 draw as Danijel Subasic saved three penalties. Zlatko Dalic team remain in the hunt to follow the side of 1998, which advanced to the last four in France.

Brazil – Mexico – 2-0

Belgium – Japan – 3-2

Brazil beat Mexico as widely expected, but another favorite – Belgium had to do their best to defeat Japan.

Sweden – Switzerland – 1-0

Colombia – England – 1-1 (3-4 pen.)

The first England’s World Cup penalty shoot-out victory in four, just the second in a major tournament. Southgate’s troops are in the Last 8, the favourites versus Sweden, and now English football has the opportunity to achieve high results not seen for decades.
