2018 FIFA World Cup: Goldman Sachs predicts Brazil would come out on top

Four years is a long period in modern football, but players, fans and countries have long-standing memories.

The last match of Brazil at the World Cup is a loss to the Netherlands in the match for the third place, which followed a humiliating defeat with a score of 7-1 from Germany in the semifinals.

Nevertheless, Goldman Sachs study assumes triumph in Russia for Brazil, as the South American side are determined to win its sixth trophy in history and take revenge against Germany.

According to Goldman Sachs forecasts, Brazil’s course to the final will also include another historic meeting – a repeat of the 1998 World Cup finals versus France. The French obtained a landmark victory 20 years ago, but this time Brazil will prevail, analysts believe.

Undoubtedly, the comeback to fitness of the Brazilian talisman striker Neymar has played a certain role in placing Brazil at the top of the World Cup favorites, given that the player has brilliantly proved himself in the last tournament warm-up matches.

Goldman Sachs estimates the probability of Brazil’s victory at 18.5%, while the second-placed French have only 11.3%.

As for the other teams playing in Russia in 2018, it seems that there will not be many surprises. It is expected that 20 out of 32 countries will not even win a single match in groups, and all seeded teams, with the exception of the host country – Russia, will go through the playoff stage.

Another forecast, prepared by bank UBS last month, suggests that Germany will again become the world champion. However, historically, the World Cup is an unpredictable competition, and it is unlikely that the tournament, which begins on June 14, will break this tradition.
